What are the American Indian Education Programs (AIEP)?
The AIEP is dedicated to educating all students and staff about American Indian tribes. In addition to offering cultural and language classes, the program provides academic support, college preparedness resources, cultural connection opportunities, and much more for American Indian students. Use the links on the left to explore the mission statements and guidance for each funding source.
How do we achieve this?
With direction from federal and state programs, the AIEP works closely with the American Indian Parent Guidance Committee. This committee, in collaboration with the American Indian Education Director and the school district, establishes all activities and goals while adhering to the requirements of each funding source.
Who is eligible for these programs?
The American Indian Education Programs are available to all students. The American Indian Education Program provides additional specialized services to American Indian students, parents and families. All services are supplemental to existing services or are services not provided by another school program. American Indian Education Program services may be provided to any American Indian student who is:
An enrolled member of a tribe, band or other organized group, including Alaskan Natives.
The child or grandchild of a member of a tribe, band or other organized group. (students who are not enrolled but have a parent or grandparent who is enrolled in an American Indian tribe)
Self identification of American Indian status as per Minnesota State statute.
What if I don't know if I'm an American Indian?
Special services are available to students and families who wish to explore their ancestry. We recognize that all family history may not be 100% accurate and try our best to discover accurate ancestry. The State of Minnesota allows self identification of American Indian ancestry. The inability to prove American Indian ancestry does not change this.
Does the student identify as American Indian or Alaska Native as defined by the state of Minnesota?
The state of Minnesota definition includes persons having origins in any of the original peoples of North America who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition. [This question is needed to calculate state aid/funding.]
